Controls, and what is the POINT anyway?

As has been mentioned, you cant select which direction to shoot in which ends up getting you killed frequently. The left/right tilt controls do the exact opposite of what you expect. To make things worse, You can sail around for hours killing things and accumulating gold, but the more powerful ships never unlock no matter how much gold you have. What is the point of this game, besides wasting my time?
